Source: Japan -TKS Action: To be discussed at SC2/WG2 Tokyo meeting (Nov95) Status: National contribution Reference: Distribution: ISO/IEC JTC1/SC2/WG2 Japan has two concerns about changing the names of characters in ISO/IEC 10646-1:1993. 1. The endless discussions on character names is interfering with progress on other SC2/WG2 work that is more important to the international community as well as Japan. Japan encourages SC2/WG2 to focus on adding to the repertoire rather than fine tuning the character names. 2. Many national bodies including Japan have published national standards based on ISO/IEC 10646. It is expensive to make modifications to these national standards. Japan proposes following resolutions to SC2/WG2: o "The names of characters in ISO/IEC 10646 are not intended to be used to identify properties of characters or to document linguistic characteristics". If additional information is clearly necessary in the standard, such information should be placed into Annex Q rather than changing the character names in the code tables. o "SC2/WG2 instructs its editor to draft an addendum to add a rule in Annex K "Once assigned, character names are immutable" ---end of text nmchange.doc/n1260.doc---- [end of document N 1260]
