Scope of Work
Develop a universal multiple-octet coded character set that encompasses the world’s scripts. This is Work Item JTC1.02.18 - ISO/IEC 10646.
Progress of Work and Achievements
JTC 1 ballots approved, in January 1997, four additional amendments to ISO/IEC 10646-1 (DAM 5, 6, 7 and 8) covering additional repertoires for Hangul, Tibetan and Hebrew. DAM 8, an informative annex on CJK Unification Rules, as approved by JTC 1 as well. Final text is being prepared for submittal of camera ready copies to ITTF for publication.
Prepared a proposed disposition of comments for ballot issues related to pDAM 9, Identifiers for Characters. Final text, and prepared final text for consideration at WG2 meeting 33 in Greece.
Completed its work on 3 other pDAMs for additional repertoires on Ethiopic, Canadian Syllabics, and Cherokee scripts, pDAMs 10, 11 and 12 respectively. SC2 ballot results are on the agenda for WG2 meeting 33 in Greece in July 1997. It is expected that a disposition of comments will be prepared for these 3 pDAMs and final text to be prepared for further processing.
The Character Glyph Model Technical Report has been sent to JTC1 for balloting.
Continued to enhance the set of principles and a process to prioritize the various repertoire additions to WG2. The new process has been extremely helpful in managing and prioritizing repertoire additions to 10646.
The Rapporteur of the IRG is Mr. Zhang Zhoucai of China. His term runs until the SC2 plenary session in Greece.
Established a World Wide Web site for WG2 and a WG2 ftp site for posting electronic documents. The URL is www.dkuug.dk/JTC1/SC2/WG2. Keld Simonsen of the Danish Unix Users Group (dkuug) in Copenhagen, Denmark operates the site.

5. WG2 Liaisons
WG2 continues to work very closely with the following liaison organizations.
- AFII
- ITU-T/SG8
- The Unicode Consortium
- Taipei Computer Association (TCA)
In addition, WG2 has worked very closely with the following working groups but no official liaisons exist between them and WG2.
- SC2/WG3 - 7-bit and 8-bit Codes
- SC18/WG8 and WG9 - Text and Office Systems and Keyboards respectively
- ISO/TC46

6. Mailing List
- The average number of recipients of WG2 documents is 80. Their national bodies or individuals that are linguistic and/or technical experts on coding technology nominate them. The number of attendees, representing 19 national bodies, 3 liaison organizations and 18 affiliations, is now steady at an average of 35 people per meeting.
7. Issues Requiring Consideration by SC2.
WG2 requests SC2 to consider and approve the following resolutions:
