TITLE: ISO/IEC 10646-1 Editorial Corrigenda - Cumulative List

SOURCE: Bruce Paterson, project co-editor

STATUS: Standing Document in response to resolution 26.2 (San Francisco)

ACTION: For review and confirmation by WG2

DISTRIBUTION: Members of JTC1/SC2/WG2

INTRODUCTION

This working paper contains the accumulated editorial corrigenda arising from Defect Reports that have been accepted by JTC1/SC2/WG2, as recorded in the following WG2 documents:

N 949R, N 1031R, & N 1086.

For each corrigendum item, or group of items, reference numbers are given for:

a. the WG2 paper which describes the defect,

b. within that paper, the item number (if any) of the defect,

c. the WG2 paper which records the disposition (acceptance) of the defect.

These numbers are shown in square brackets thus - [a-b : c].

The symbol # indicates minor corrections to other clauses for consistency, shown here out of sequence.

The symbol **** indicates that there appears to be an editorial error either in the original defect report, or in the disposition. The details of the corrigendum item are subject to confirmation.

New text, drafted by the editor in accordance with instructions, appears in 6.4 and in the Note of 16.

6 Basic structure and nomenclature

After sub-clause 6.3 (page 7) add a new sub-clause as follows -

6.4 Naming of characters

Each graphic character specified in ISO/IEC 10646 shall be identified by a unique name. A character name either:

a. shall denote the customary meaning of the character, or

b. shall describe the shape of the corresponding graphic symbol, or

c. shall follow the rule given in clause 26 for Chinese/Japanese/Korean unified ideographs.

Guidelines to be used for constructing the names of characters in cases a. and b. are given in

annex K.

[N 1004-30: N 1031R]

[Editor's note: The above text is taken from clauses 18 para.2, 25 para.2, and annex K Rule 4.]

7 Special features of the UCS

Replace the paragraph numbers 1. to 4. by a) b) c) d) respectively.

[N 1047: N 1086]

10 The Restricted Use zone

In paragraph 1, line 6, delete "(see item 4 in clause 7)".

After sub-clause 10.2 add new subclause with title -

10.3 Compatibility characters

Delete paragraph 4. of clause 7 (Special features of the UCS) and insert it as the text of the new sub-clause 10.3.

[N 1054R: N 1086]

10.1 Private Use characters

Paragraph 2, line 2: delete "(DRCS)";

NOTE 2, line 1: replace "DRCS" by "dynamically-redefinable characters".

[N 1004-10: N 1031R]

11 Private Use groups and planes

At the end of the title add "and zones".

After paragraph 2 add new paragraph as follows -

"The 6400 code positions E000 to F800 of the Basic Multilingual Plane shall be for private use."

[N 989-P003: N1031R]

14 Coded representation forms of the UCS

In lines 1 and 3 of the Note following paragraph 1, amend "ISO" to "ISO/IEC".

[N 1065: N 1086]

16 Use of control functions with the UCS

In paragraph 1, line 2, delete "ISO 2022, ".

[N 1049: N 1086]

Before the last paragraph insert a new Note as follows -

NOTE - The term "character" appears in the definition of many of the control functions specified in ISO/IEC 6429, to identify the elements on which the control functions will act. When such control functions are applied to coded characters according to ISO/IEC 10646 the action of those control functions will depend on the type of element from ISO/IEC 10646 that has been chosen, by the application, to be the element (or character) on which the control functions act. These elements may be chosen to be characters (non-combining characters and/or combining characters) or may be chosen in other ways (such as composite sequences) when applicable.

[N 1052: N 1086]

17 Declaration of identification of features

In 17.2, before paragraph 2 (commencing "If such an ") insert new paragraph as follows -

"If such an escape sequence appears within a CC-data-element conforming to ISO/IEC 2022, it shall consist only of the sequences of bit combinations as shown above."

[N 999: N 1031R]

In 17.3, before the last paragraph (commencing "If such a ") insert new paragraph as follows -

"If such an escape sequence appears within a CC-data-element conforming to ISO/IEC 2022, it shall consist only of the sequences of bit combinations as shown above."

[N 999: N 1031R]

In 17.4, before the last paragraph (commencing "If such an ") insert new paragraph as follows -

"If such an escape sequence appears within a CC-data-element conforming to ISO/IEC 2022, it shall consist only of the sequences of bit combinations as shown above."

[N 999: N 1031R]

Replace the whole of 17.5 with a revised title and text as follows -

17.5 Identification of the coding system of ISO/IEC 2022

When the escape sequences from ISO/IEC 2022 are used, the identification of a return, or transfer, from UCS to the coding system of ISO/IEC 2022 shall be by the escape sequence ESC 02/05 04/00.

If such an escape sequence appears within a CC-data-element conforming to ISO/IEC 10646, it shall be padded in accordance with clause 16.

If such an escape sequence appears within a CC-data-element conforming to ISO/IEC 2022, it shall consist only of the sequences of bit combinations as shown above.

NOTE - Escape sequence ESC 02/05 04/00 is normally used for return to the restored state of ISO/IEC 2022. The escape sequence ESC 02/05 04/00 specified here is sometimes not exactly as specified in ISO/IEC 2022 due to the presence of padding octets. For this reason the escape sequences in 17.2 for the identification of UCS include the octet 02/15 to indicate that the return does not always conform to that standard.

[N 999 & N 1048: N 1086]

18 Structure of the code tables and lists

Paragraph 7 (commencing "Furthermore, the user "):

in line 2 replace "characters he needs" by "needed characters".

[N 1004-14: N 1031R]

in lines 3 & 4 replace "already coded earlier" by "coded elsewhere".

[N 1004-15: N 1031R]

20 Characters in bi-directional context

Page 12, RH column, 1st part-paragraph (commencing "characters depend"):

in lines 1 & 2 replace "of the SYMMETRIC SWAPPING" by "related to the symmetric swapping characters".

Page 12, RH column, 2nd paragraph (commencing "For example, "):

in lines 1 & 2 replace "SYMMETRIC SWAPPING is ACTIVATED" by "character ACTIVATE SYMMETRIC SWAPPING occurs".

[N 1004-16: N 1031R]
